On August 5, 2009, Jan Healy watched in horror as her strong, athletic 49-year-old husband suffered a massive stroke. She soon learned that Brian had a severe hemorrhagic stroke in the right hemisphere of his brain. As the bleed was deep in the basal ganglia, surgery was impossible. The bleed was spreading at an alarming rate. If Brian survived those first harrowing days, he would have months, perhaps a year of therapy ahead of him. This is a story of survival, recovery, hope and the power of love between two people. |

Brian and Jan Healy live in Lake Forest, California. Brian is a mechanical engineer for Toyota and Jan has her own private college coaching business. They are members of the Orange County Stroke Rehab Network. They also speak on behalf of stroke survivors and their caregivers. "This is an emotional journey of a family recovering from the devastating effects of a hemorrhagic stroke. It underscores the importance of having a supportive family to navigate through the difficult times and emerge from the 'fog'. Although strokes may cause changes, it shows the changes do not always need to mean 'less than'. If one can keep their heart and mind open during this time, you can emerge with deeper relationships with those you love. Thanks for allowing me on your journey." Ken Lynn, M.D.
"Jan and Brian share their personal journey from despair to hope and eventual triumph from this unexpected turn in their lives. Their strory is filled with details of love and caring on the road to recovery and demonstrates that 'it takes a village' in terms of family, friends, food and faith to achieve this kind of outcome. Told from the point of view of both caregiver and survivor, it really is a love story about commitment to recovery and ultimately a commitment to each other." Pamela Kauss M.S.
